Our Greece Adventure: Women’s Basketball Travel Blog

Less than 24 hours to Greece. In other words, it’s packing day. My name is Joy Bergstrom and I’m a freshman on the South Dakota girls’ basketball team here! Thank you so much! Personally, it’s my first time to go abroad, so I feel very lucky to be able to experience such a wonderful community. This trip gives me many “firsts”. Not only am I traveling abroad for the first time, but I am also participating in my first college basketball game! But I am more excited! Our team has worked hard to be the best in training this summer.

Overall, I am thrilled with everything about this trip. Some of the things we do and see even seem unreal to me. I especially look forward to visiting the Parthenon because it is the center of Greece. Plus, I’m so excited to check out what the Greek beaches and water are like. I love the beach and being outside, so that’s something I’m definitely looking forward to.The team and I have had two of his students here at USD come and talk to us. I learned a lot about the specific places I plan to visit. They had the opportunity to study abroad in Greece, so we were very fortunate to hear about their experiences and give us tips on what to expect! What I really learned from their presentation One of them is enjoying the time we spend together as a team and doing our best in whatever we are doing in the moment. They reminded me to focus on what’s in front of me now, not “what’s next.” Finally, the food! This trip has definitely helped me grow and I am sure many others will try new things. I think it’s really cool to know what the different types of food in Greece are like and what makes them different from the US Before we set off on our trip, the team was able to actually share some Greek food. Together. Tasos, who hails from Greece and plays for his team in men’s basketball here in the USD, has joined. He told us all about the different types of cuisine we would see and try and even assured us it would be even better in Greece! I think this was a great opportunity for our team as well, as we were able to ask Thassos questions about the Greek language, restaurants, symbols, and everyday things that we can’t experience here.

Finally, this trip to Greece will allow the team, the program and the whole community to grow as one. A lot of people have worked hard to make this happen and we are all very grateful. It’s my first year here and you may feel differently but our team already feels very close. We are so excited about this additional opportunity to get even closer with our teammates and really bond over this amazing opportunity. We wish all of our best of luck and think of the entire Yote community back home! Good luck! I’m an overpacker so it shouldn’t take this long…
