CNN —
Investigators for the House Select Committee investigating the Jan. 6, 2021 attacks on the U.S. Capitol have asked the U.S. Secret Service for information about its agents’ contacts with members of the far-right Oath Keepers group. rice field.
The investigation found that members of the group, including leader Stewart Rose, alleged they were in contact with Secret Service agents before former President Donald Trump’s rally after the 2020 election. Members of the Oath Keepers are currently on trial for charges related to the attack on the Capitol.
Secret Service spokesman Anthony Guglielmi confirmed to CNN that the Jan. 6 commission contacted the agency and “provided a verbal briefing to staff.”
NBC News first reported the investigation.
Guglielmi told CNN that the Secret Service will provide records of contact between Oathkeepers and Secret Service agents.
Oathkeeper members contacted the Secret Service from time to time before Jan. 6, 2021, to ask about items allowed for gatherings, an agency official told CNN earlier this week. Additionally, upon learning that the group was due to attend an event, the agent contacted and met with the members.
It’s not uncommon for law enforcement to contact groups interested in investigating them, but during trials, Oathkeeper’s ties are under increasing scrutiny.
Former North Carolina leader of the Oath Keepers, John Zimmerman, testified earlier this month in preparation for the rally, and Rhodes offered advice on what weapons were allowed near the rally of the Secret Service. Rose also repeatedly stated that he was in contact with his agent, said Zimmerman, who said he did not hear the entire conversation.
CNN asked the Secret Service for the date of the contact and the name of the Oath Keepers, and whether the contact was recorded at the time.
